| About The My Experience Section |
 |
| |
Well, simply put ... I am the guy that has seen it all, heard it all, and replaces and installs it all. I do not accept commission or pay per clicks, I do not have a favorite place to buy my supplies, | also know that we live in Canada - not Florida. What is said on the label, might work if you live in a place where the climate never changes, but in Canada, we get it all. In the winter, our homes are dry and warm. in the summer, our homes are humid and hot. The outside temperature, and indoor air conditioning, does a lot of things to our home that most countries do not understand while they create these products. That is why I included the my experience section.
PS Watch the advice you are giving by an hardware Super Store salesman. They will naturally try to push a product the management tells them to, either due to overstock, promotion, or favorite supplier. In reality, the in store salesman has almost no idea what he/she is talking about, if they did - do you really think they would be working in a super store making pennies when they could be on the job making real money. Do your research. |

| |
| Pros : They Say |
• Huge selection of styles and colors.Available in tiles or sheets.
• Low price, low maintenance. Double-thick vinyl is ideal for damp areas like bathrooms. |
| Cons : They Say |
• Vulnerable to scratches, tears, stains and wear. |
| My Experience : Notes From The Renovator : William Bougie |
 |
| |
Usually used by landlords or rental properties as a cheap, clean, and easy fix. Scratches and rips very easily. Dulls out quickly just by washing. Stick on tile type always will move over time. Dirt forms on stick on edges due to glue that never dry's. Edges always tend to lift, and snap.
My Opinion : Do not bother with the stick-on vinyl tiles at all. If you do decide to go with vinyl, only use the rolls. The stick-on tiles will quickly give you nightmares. Before installing, make 100% sure the floor is perfect. The slightest crack, nail, play in the floor, or imperfection will quickly show up in vinyl. Make sure you follow all cleaning instructions so you will not dull out the finish. Socks and slippers are a must.
The good thing about a vinyl floor is that it is easy to care for as long as you do not use any harsh cleaners. Regular cleaners will dull out the finish, dry out the vinyl, and the cracks will come. If treated properly, a vinyl floor will last for many years.
Saving Money? At first. yes and maybe. Overtime - No. If your reselling quickly, this will be a quick flaw hide. But all agents will see this. Vinyl will never increase your resale value. At the same time, it will make your room presentable. In some cases, using a cheap cover is a smarter idea than going with an expensive alternative such as tile or hardwood. After all, who is to decide if your choice of color or texture of either hardwood or tile, is what the potential new buyer wants. At least if the new buyer wants to change the floor, in general, a vinyl floor is an easier and cheaper floor to remove and replace. |

Linoleum : Everything You Need To Know : Click Here |
| |
| Pros : They Say |
• Huge selection of styles and colors.Available in tiles or sheets.
• Natural, biodegradable and hypoallergenic, composed of flax and natural resin. Does not trap dust or bacteria, which helps air quality. Low maintenance, durable and mildew-resistant. |
| Cons : They Say |
• Does not suit all decors. |
| My Experience : Notes From The Renovator : William Bougie |
 |
| |
Well, you might recognize Linoleum from your school days. This stuff is pretty tough! It is now making a comeback in the flooring world. There are now many finishes to choose from and is the cheaper alternative to tile - in some cases. It is still widely used as a flooring cover-up and avoided in some cases, by environmentalists due to its toxic content.
In any case, toxic or not, refinishing Linoleum is restricted to re glazing. It can not be re stained a different color, or sanded. What you see is what you get. While stronger than vinyl, it still has the same tendency of dulling and cracking unless careful maintenance is followed. |

Ceramic Tiles : Everything You Need To Know : Click Here |
| |
| Pros : They Say |
• Huge selection of colors styles and sizes.
• Can easily be coordinated with tile backsplash. |
| Cons : They Say |
• Can cause discomfort to legs and back after prolonged standing.
• Not all tiles are equally wear-resistant; high-traffic areas like kitchens call for stronger ceramic. Can crack or chip. Needs a level sub floor. |
| My Experience : Notes From The Renovator : William Bougie |
 |
| |
Once upon a time, tiles were used only used in kitchens and bathrooms. That has long since changed. Tiles are considered cold and hard. The hard part will not go away, but the cold part is a thing of the past. We now know, that tiles, like stone, carry heat. With the addition of under-tile heaters, tile actually radiates heat. If you do not have under tile heaters. I recommend increasing the heat below the tiles, in the basement, so now your heating the basement, heat rises, while rising, they heat up the tile, thus requiring less heat on the upper floor. Smart - Your killing two birds with one stone.
As per using tile in other rooms, why not. They are strong, durable, and easy to maintain. Just be sure to re-seal the grout at least every 2 years or cracks in the grout will appear. You will also notice grout color change unless sealed. Also be sure that when installing tiles, there is absolutely no play in the floors. Even if the tile does not lift, the grout will.
As per the hard part, simple, toss down a throw rug.
Notes : Make sure you have a few tiles after installing, left over. Like anything, tiles can and will break. Finding a matching tile in the future, will be almost impossible. A broken tile is easy to replace if you have a few spares hanging around. Especially when buying a tile at a discount, buy plenty more ... they are end of stock, so buying a replacement is impossible.
Make sure you buy a tile that is correct for your room. Every tile you buy, has a rating for its use. Some are made for bathrooms, others are not. See our tile section - click here |
