When removing mold - it's important to stop the source of humidity before attempting to rebuild. I also strongly suggest you seal off the entire area before starting any type of work in the infected area. Mold spores will become airbourne and quickly spread when disturbed. Beds, clothing, and even furniture can attacked by mold. Make sure your working with a mask and air cleaner.
There are many methods in removing mold. Some suggest bleach and others suggest vinegar. I know of a few products that are availible on the market - but none are proven to be better than prevention. The source must be scrubbed off using a wire brush and mold killer of choice - and then fully dried. Leave on a high powered fan running for a few days and keep the heat on to help dry the area. A dehumidifier and air cleaner using true hepa filter is recommended.
Not all mold is dangerous - you can find out by having it inspected. All mold is annoying and will spread quickly if not killed. When working with mold - make sure to contain everything that has come in contact with your work area in plastic bags - including your work clothing. All shop vac bags, filters, plastic, and paper, should also be bagged and removed.
Once the source has been repaired, the insulation and vapor barrier replaced - rebuild your area as you normally would. If it's a bathroom or kitchen - install a fan vent. Silicone and caulk all area's where humidity and air can enter. Expect to spend at least 1 full week of not using your infected area during the process. Do not rush this project or the mold will just return.
Even big mold removing companies, leave fans and dehumidifier equiptment running for days before even starting to rebuild. Watch out for the quick fix - there is none. Hope this helps :) |
